Pegboard Nerds - BADBOI

Pegboard Nerds seem to be on a bit of a roll at the minute, with a selection of massive tracks appearing within the last few months. And it seems like they've got no plans to slow down, as they've just dropped another one, BADBOI. And what's more, it's free! So many artists being generous at the moment!

Further to the work they started with previous track New Style, the nerds are continuing their exploration of different genres, and this time, it's trap. Does it work? Find out below.

I might as well get this out the way to start with: I hate trap. For the most point, it seems to be a massively uninspired genre that sees very little in the way of creativity, in my opinion. I'm not sure I'll ever like it, to be honest.

BUT. I do like Pegboard Nerds. A lot. So if anyone can convoke me, maybe it could be them? They've certainly given it a good go, as BADBOI is yet another massive track from the Nerds, and with it's blaring sirens and gangsta-like vocal samples, it certainly goes some ways to living up to its title.

It is Trap, but it retains the duo's trademark stylistic qualities. What doe that mean in practice? That BADBOI exudes energy, and seems to absolutely rattle along. It also feels very busy, which in this case is a good thing - one of my main qualms with Trap is that it often feels too sparse. And, as you'd expect, the melodies are definitely up to muster, with the rasping synths giving the track a real naughty, dirty streak. The drum and percussion work is flawless, with enough cowbell to satisfy everyone. They've cleverly replaced some of Trap's characteristic snare rolls with the aforementioned cowbells - it's not just funny, but it's also an example of Pegboard Nerds classic style. It's mischievous, it's creative, and listening to it, it's easy to forget it's Trap.

But at the end of the day, it is, and unfortunately, though it's mostly a successful experiment, I'm not sure it stands up to their other recent releases. I said a similar thing about New Style, if you recall, which on reflection, was perhaps a little harsh. This time, though, I do feel that it's really not their strongest release.

Nevertheless, it's fun, it hits hard, and it's free. BADBOI may not be Pegboard Nerd's strongest offering, but that doesn't mean it's a bad track by any means. I'm still not sure I'll ever like Trap, though. The Nerds have the closest so far to convincing me about it, though, and BADBOI will definitely become a welcome addition to my library.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to tag someone's property.
