Zedd - Addicted To A Memory (Feat. Bahari)

Alright, alright, I take it all back. If you follow EO, you'll know that I've given Zedd a fairly rough time lately. His decision to focus on throwaway pop rather than the substantial electro that he was so good at has rubbed many of his fans up the wrong way - me amongst them.

But now, Zedd is back. Proper Zedd. Good Zedd. To launch the preorder for his sophomore album True Colors, he's released a new track that is available to download instantly. That track is Addicted To A Memory, the first on the album. It features Bahari on vocals, and it's everything we've wanted from Zedd all this time.

Addicted To A Memory is everything that you loved about his Clarity-era work. It's a beautifully written song, with gritty electro elements.

It begins with enigmatic guitar and the breathy, sensational vocals of Bahari. The chords are amazing, and fairly soon, we're building up to something big. "Please, PLEASE, be good!" you find yourself saying.

And then it hits.

Yes! Electro Zedd is back. It's mean, it's bass-y, it's wonderful. It's all punctuated by big, euphoric chords - granted, we're in familiar territory here (indeed, parts of it bear more than a passing resemblance to Slam The Door), but it's difficult to care about that after so long without something decent.

Everything continues to build, to an absolutely explosive ending. This isn't just a return to Zedd's electro style; this is a return to Zedd at his absolute best. He's absolutely still got it, and I really hope that this isn't just a fleeting glimpse of what we came to love about him in the first place.

My one criticism is that the electro drops seem to be quite a bit quieter than the rest of the track, which is a little bit of a shame.

But Addicted To A Memory has absolutely renewed my interest in Zedd, and his forthcoming album. As long as it's a good mix of electro and pop, I'll be content. In the meantime though, this will do very nicely indeed.
