Rogue - Night After Night

Monstercat seems to have a very keen eye for exciting, innovative artists. More of the tracks on this blog so far have come from that label than any other. Today, it's time to add to that tally with the latest track from 23 year old producer Rogue, who has just premiered his brand new track, Night After Night, over on THUMP.

Real name Joel Hunt, Rogue made quite the name for himself a few years ago with a number of high profile dubstep tracks. Since then, he certainly hasn't been standing still, as is evidenced by his latest offering, a down tempo, glitchy retro track that hits all of the right marks. Read on for more.

Night After Night is a perfect blend of the old and the contemporary. It has the most amazing retro bassline, with the sort of twangy bass synth you might have heard in any 80s track from the hand of Pete Waterman. That might not sound like a compliment for a track in 2014, but it just totally works. The twinkly melody over the top of this adds to the nostalgic feel, but it all hangs together in a very modern way, with a hard hitting kick-snare combo, and a 115 BPM tempo that sees it fit right alongside other glitch-hop or similar downtempo bass music. Add in the glitchy, house music-like chords, and you got yourself a perfect fusion of the old and new.

Perhaps it becomes a little repetitive - aside from a middle section that changes key, but retains the same melody, there's little variation. But Joel gets away with this because the track is so totally addictive. You're thrown in for one last go round near the end, following a sort-of false ending, and I'm honestly not complaining.

That one minor quibble aside, Night After Night is an extraordinarily promising start to a new era for Rogue. He himself says there's much more to come, and I for one can hardly wait.
