Michael Woods - In Your Arms (Feat. Lauren Dyson)

Michael Woods is back to smash up club sound systems across the land with his brand new banger, In Your Arms, featuring the vocal talents of Lauren Dyson. It's a euphoric club track, no doubt, but this progressive house number has a little bit more beneath the surface than your average one. Read on to find out why.

Firstly, it's nice to hear a track that's rhythmically a bit more interesting than most, choosing not to just rely on the tried and tested syncopated rhythms that have become a mainstay of dance music. The rhythms here are straight, and drive the track along nicely. A bit music nerdy, I know, but what can I say, I'm a classical musician at heart. If you don't know what a syncopated rhythm is... well, just go look it up, or go and listen to the melody in Calvin Harris' I'm Not Alone.

Next, there seems to be a slight uncertainty of tonality, with the chord sequence used providing an interesting duel between major and minor. Again, uh, look it up.

My final point of interest you'll probably find a bit easier to digest and spot: the bass line. Man, that bass line is addictive. It underpins each drop, and is a bit funky, and forms a sort of delightful countermelody to what's going on above it (again... oh, you know the drill by now).

This is surely my most technical analysis and review yet, and I apologise if it's flown right over your head - not everyone is classically trained, after all! All you need to know really, is that it all comes together to make an extremely satisfying banger, that's a bit more intelligent than your average one. Give it a listen - hopefully then you'll understand.
