Zedd - I Want You To Know (Feat. Selena Gomez)

It seems like we're going to have to wait a while longer for Zedd's mythical second album, but the German producer has just bestowed some new material upon us (under his own name, at least - if you recall, he produced a track for Ariana Grande a while ago) in the form of a new single called I Want You To Know.

It features the vocals of Zedd's (alleged) current love interest Selena Gomez - the two have been teasing a joint project for some time. Does it mark a return to form for Zedd though?

Well, truthfully, that depends. If you're a fan of Zedd's old, hard-hitting electro material, you're undoubtedly going to be disappointed. It's been a long time since Zedd went down that route, and to be honest, it's looking increasingly unlikely that we'll ever get more tracks along the lines of Shave It, Slam The Door or Shotgun.

If, though, you're more of a fan of Zedd's more recent, radio-friendly releases like Stay The Night, his collaboration with Hayley Williams, then there's a lot to like here. Regardless of which camp you reside in, the track is undeniably well produced, as Anton continues to prove he's one of the masters at juggling lots of different components and synths to make a cohesive sound. And indeed, the melody is extremely catchy. Anton now really knows how to make a chart-topping hit.

Harsh though it may sound, I can't help but feel that Selena wouldn't have gotten this gig if the pair weren't romantically involved. Granted, she puts in a solid performance, but it all just feels a little flat and safe, and the track does nothing to show off her vocal prowess at all - I don't doubt that she actually has far more to offer than what's on display here (stop sniggering in the back).

So, once again, Zedd has managed to create another inoffensive, pop hit, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But whilst listening to it, you just can't ever escape the feeling that he's capable of so much more. I Want You To Know is a solid track, but is also fairly forgettable, and does nothing to really show off the abilities of either party.

To conclude, then, it's another hit from Zedd, but another that you're more likely to hear in some run -of-the-mill nightclub than on the MainStage at this year's festivals. Zedd now has the fame and fortune, and has absolutely proven that he's able to break into the mainstream, and I'd never begrudge an artist for that, ever. But it would just be nice if he could do something a little bit more creative to enlighten the masses, instead of pandering to them, whilst he's there.

For pop fans, this is a must. For electro fans, I'd say it's probably time to give his album Clarity another spin...
