Deadmau5 - Some Chords (Andrei Stephen Remix)

A few months ago, Deadmau5 and Dillon Francis held a remix competition. Somewhat bizarrely, the task was to remix, Dillon Francis' remix, of Some Chords, with the winner having their track released through Deadmau5's label, mau5trap.

And as of a few weeks ago, we have a winner! Yes, it was Andrei Stephen's remix that won out in the end, undoubtedly helped out by the blitz of online publicity for it, but also by the fact that it's an absolutely cracking remix.

Andrei has cleverly tapped into the sound of the moment, by crafting a pounding future house track. It retains many elements of both the original, and of Francis' remix, but at the drop it comes firmly into its own, with Andrei's style stamped all over it. The synth stabs that punctuate the main melody are great, and the whole track is very well produced and mixed, pounding along at quite a rate.

The bass is really tight, it's got an infectious hook, and, whilst it could never reach the extremely lofty bar set by the mau5's original, it's clear that Andrei has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps putting out work of this quality.

No word yet on a release date, but Andrei's remix is set to appear soon on a remix compilation on mau5trap. It'll be great to see what this fledgling producer gets up to next.

The Octopus' Rating: 6.5/8
