Pierce Fulton - Kuaga/Noon Gun

Following previews released a few weeks ago, Pierce Fulton has now dropped his double single release, Kuaga/Noon Gun. The pair of progressive house tracks showcase the fantastic melodic aspects and sound design we've come to expect from the producer. Each one has a slightly different flavour, but they also work together well, with the former being slightly more melodic, and the latter being a bit more big room-y.

Fulton is fast becoming one of dance music's rising stars. Can he maintain the momentum he's built up with this latest release? Read on to find out.

I thought as this is more of a double single than an EP, it would be best to review each track individually rather than both together as a cohesive work. With that in mind, let's start with Kuaga.

Kuaga is, as I said earlier, the slightly more melodic of the two. Pierce's work is always spot on when it comes to melody and chords, and this track is no exception, with the gradual build up of the track really paying off when the drop comes along - an explosion of stuttering synths really bring Kuaga to life. The singsong-y vocals (which I assume are African in origin, but I could be totally wrong) mesh nicely into the rest of the production, and give the track character and an extra hook.

Kuaga is a real feel good track without ever particularly trying to be. It's vibrant, colourful, and I applaud Pierce for his sound design and the clarity of all of its intricate parts. It ticks all of the boxes, and is an all round great single.

The Octopus' Rating: 7/8

Noon Gun provides a good balance in this release by being not quite so melodically focussed. It still displays the same control of chords and harmony as the first, but in a much more restricted capacity. In some ways, this track is more progressive than the first, as the lack of melody and the use of repetition means that variety within the track is provided through the addition of layers and new sounds.

It has a much greater drive, and the stabbing synths drive the track along. It displays the same vibrancy as Pierce's other work, but is a bit more intense. Unfortunately, it feels slightly more stagnant for it, though it is nice to have a contrast between the two tracks. The middle section is particularly successful - I love the synths that feel like they're rolling off someone's tongue (that's a terrible analogy, but when you hear it, you'll know what I mean).

Though not quite as good as Kuaga, Noon Gun is still a great track, and rounds off another solid release for Pierce Fulton.

The Octopus' Rating: 6/8
