Mord Fustang - Drivel

It's always nice when artists that you think must've dropped off the face of the earth unexpectedly return. Such is the case with Mord Fustang, who has released a brand new single, Drivel, following a very lengthy departure from the scene.

Mord is frequently hailed as one of the innovators within Dance music. Is Drivel able to live up to that mantra? I think you'd better read on to find out.

Drivel sees us in extremely familiar territory for Mord. In some respects, it almost feels like a bit of a step backwards. One of my criticisms of Mord Fustang has always been his seeming reluctance to move his sound forward. Every artist has a signature sound, and that's fine, but you have to vary what you create with it. And two years ago, before he disappeared, the Estonian producer appeared to be doing just that - Champloo was one of my absolute favourite tracks of 2012, and it managed to retain the best aspects of Mord, but was completely unlike anything I'd ever heard.

Drivel, on the other hand, sees a return to a far more familiar sound. It's a good job, then, that absence makes the heart grow fonder, because truth be told, in this instance, I really don't mind if this latest track is a step backwards. It's just great to hear Mord doing what he does again. And anyway, all of this is not to say that in the two years or so that he's been largely absent, things haven't moved on at all. Drivel is a delightful fusion of Mord's special brand of Electro, and aspects of 8-bit music. The melody line is a throwback to a time when video games were simpler, and 16-bits were just an outlandish pipe dream.

Drivel, then, serves as a slice of familiarity to reintroduce us to a man we once thought lost forever. It might not push boundaries stylistically, but it's still a pounding Electro track that reminds us why we loved Mord Fustang in the first instance. It'll be interesting to see where he goes from here, and I personally am looking forward to hearing even more new material from him. I just hope that he doesn't rest on his laurels.
